Importance of Reading the Bible
Many Christians start each year with the goal of reading through the entire Bible in a year. While some achieve this goal, many don't. Others don't bother to read God’s Word at all. This is a major issue. Why is it important to regularly read Scripture?
Understanding your options
The Bible is the first and most important resource for understanding God and His will for your life. Romans tells us that there are some things we can learn about God through general revelation. People can learn about God's power, divine nature and divinity without Scripture by studying creation (Romans 1:120). They are also able to know God's law as it is written in their hearts (Romans 2:4-15).
There is a huge difference between knowing God and knowing God personally. Everybody knows something about God. This is why it's not possible to reject Him. But, only a small fraction of people know Him personally. The Bible is the fundamental truth that teaches about the history of the universe, sin's origin, death and morality. Without God's Word, man would not be able to understand the vital message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Understanding God's Will
While the message of eternal salvation is a central theme of Scripture, it also reveals many other things about God's will for us to live. We can learn from the examples of biblical characters what pleases God. The Word of God also provides direct instructions to believers about how to act in all circumstances.
God's inspired, inerrant Word was given to many purposes: to teach, rebuke, correct, and instruct us in righteousness; and also so that we might be complete and prepared for all good works (2 Timothy 3:16-17). You can get direction and help to serve God by reading the Bible consistently.
Understanding God's Word
The Bible's entire text can be used to help us understand the "big picture" of Scripture. However, it is important to not just read it for the sake.
How do we show God that we are worthy? It is important to study God's Word diligently so that we can understand it fully and then act faithfully on the truth (2 Timothy 2:25).
The Bible study requires careful, prayerful and thoughtful attention to the text as well as the application of biblical principles of interpretation. You can enjoy God's wisdom more by studying His Word.
It is crucial to make God's Word your authority in all areas. This will help you defend against the many spiritual attacks on Christians. "But sanctify God in your hearts, be prepared to defend anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope which is in you, with meekness, fear, and humility" (1 Peter 3:5).
If you have never read the Bible before, we encourage you to do so. We encourage you to read the entire Bible if you are familiar with it. If not, we suggest that you focus on one verse per day. Keep thinking about this passage throughout the day, and think of other ways you can apply what you've learned.
Spend time in prayer. God, thank you for His Word and eternal life. Ask Him to guide and teach you, so you can be more faithful to Him.
